The Kentucky River Area Development District is a quasi-governmental agency working with city and county governments in the KRADD area to improve the quality of life for our citizens. KRADD serves as a representative of local units of government and citizens throughout the area as a communication network for cities, counties, state and federal governments. Aging and Independent Living Program

KRADD supports many aging programs such as supportive services at the Senior Citizens Centers. Then we also support 15 sites where hot lunches are prepared 5 days a week and meals are delivered to homes where needed. The Senior Community Service Program provides training and part-time employment and services to support health education for our aging population. Programs for the prevention of elder abuse, mental anguish, mental illness financial exploitation, neglect of the elderly and homecare services to individuals over age 60. Family caregiver service provides seven basic services for a Family Caregiver. Senior advocacy and long-term care ombudsman to investigate nursing home problems.

Community and Economic Development

KRADD provides administrative assistance to three Regional Business Parks and Industrial Authorities in the area. Public Administration Specialist assists local governments by acting as a liaison between state and federal funding agencies to acquire funding such as Economic Development Agency, Appalachian Regional Commission, Rural Development Community Development Block Grants, Land and Water Grants and Cops Grants.

Community Resources

Thru Kentucky Infrastructure Authority KRADD assists local communities in efforts to provide potable water and wastewater facilities as well as expansion of these facilities. Assisting in funding resources as well as providing maps of existing and proposed facilities.

GIS Services

Currently our staff is working with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Kentucky State Police to develop a mapping system to delineate all State, County and City streets as well as addresses. This information will be shared with public safety organizations to help with emergency and disaster relief efforts. Also we are working with Kentucky Infrastructure Authority to map all water and wastewater facilities for planning and use by local governments. Our staff can generate maps of this and other data for use by agencies in the area to assist in any efforts they may pursue.

Tourism

With the recent re-establishment of the Elk population in our area viewing of the Elk herds is becoming quite a tourist attraction. Buckhorn Lake ,Carr Creek Lake and the Natural Bridge State Parks provide camping, fishing and trail exploration. There are many sites to see in the area such as the Hindman Settlement School (est.1902) and Kentucky Appalachian Artisan Center "preserving our heritage by serving our artisans".

Transportation Planning

The primary function of the Kentucky River Area Development District is to support the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's long range planning process by analyzing transportation data, identifying and evaluating the needs of the region, evaluating and prioritizing projects for the possible inclusion in the Six-Year Highway Plan and coordinating a process for public input.
